We Are Hex, Waxeater, Yea Big + Kid Static, and Trophy Wives at The Statehouse 24 April 2009

Little 500 weekend has now passed and Bloomington is universally hungover. I did not go to the race (Little 500 is a huge bike race/excuse to drink for a week straight) but I’m sure it was great. I also did not drink any alcohol while the sun was out, but I still had a pretty fantastic weekend. Friday night there was a dirty, messy show at The Statehouse and it was crazy. I’m pretty bummed that I missed Skin Mags play but I’m sure I’ll catch them again in the future. I liked every band but We Are Hex put on a hell of a show. They sound a lot more punk/loud in concert than on their record.

Here are the pictures I was able to unearth from the depths of a basement at Grant and Wylie:

Blk Jks To Play a Free Show at Jake’s!

Blk Jks 21 February 2009 (18 of 38)
Blk Jks

I just got back from the Explorers Club show, and all I have to say is…Johnny B. Goode. A good end to my three day run at The Cinemat.

So many great shows are coming up so I will try to announce them in a timely fashion. This one is going to be great and is happening tomorrow/today/Monday. And…it’s free. That’s right, free.

Blk Jks 21 February 2009 (16 of 38)

Spirit of ’68 Presents…

Blk Jks
w/
Tammar
Push Pull
@Jake’s, 21+
Monday, March 2nd
10pm
FREE!!!

The show was originally at The Cinemat which would have made my Cinemat run an epic four days long, but alas, it was not to be. My guess would be that the show got too big. It’s going to be a good one. Check out the last time I saw Blk Jks at The Statehouse, or when I saw Tammar at NOISE.

Deer Tick moved to The Statehouse + Blk Jks

Well it sucks that The Cinemat is out of commission but it is good that the Deer Tick show on Saturday will be going on…and now it has a more beefy lineup. Now the show is:

Deer Tick

BUT NOW ADD…

Blk Jks

BLK JKS

The Blk Jks are a band from South Africa that just signed with Secretly Canadian. I actually haven’t heard them yet but I have heard from a trusted source that they are excellent. RIP Cinemat, but hellooooooooo Statehouse!
PS: Please don’t be afraid to attend because this is now a house show. It will be awesome and the house is NOT hard to find at all.

Edit: Got the Blk Jks EP from SCD (lots of abbreviations ftw!) and it is excellent. Pick it up/go to the show.

Valentine’s Week Wrap-Up + Preview of the Upcoming Week

Valentine’s week is over and I officially survived. I caught Larkin Grimm on Monday and had a good time hearing about female orgasms and how wonderful her hired band is. She was good and hearing her say “put a burkha on that bitch” pretty much made my night. Of course, no words can describe the opener, Chris Barth. I will leave it at that.

Thursday I caught some of Company of Thieves and they were decent. They did a horrendous cover of the Smashing Pumpkins’1979,” but at least I could watch Pee Wee’s Big Adventure in the background.

Friday I was at The Clinic for a minute but eventually made my way over to S. Lincoln for a good ole dance party…which got busted waaaaaaaay too soon.

I took the weekend off picture-wise since I had to take so dang many of them for class during the week.

With that settled…
Onto this week!

This Valentine’s Week in Shows (INSANITY)

So, there are a lot of shows going on this week. Titus Andronicus played at The Statehouse on Monday but I didn’t go due to being extremely flipping busy. That’s ok though, I’m pretty sure they play here every 3 days anyway.

So…onto this week. Valentine’s week (If you’re into that sort of thing)! There are a lot of shows so it’s gonna be quick n’ dirty.

Wednesday…

I took a trip over to her MySpace and she has some pretty good folky type music up there. I was listening to it in the background and then she started screaming which freaked me out, but a little screaming never hurt anybody, right? It’s at Bear’s too so expect a pretty intimate show.

Thursday…
