Featuring:
Medusa
Child Bite
Beyond Things (formerly Ephemeroptera)
Saturday, March 28
@Russian Recording (1021 S. Walnut)
9pm
6$ (includes the compilation CD)
All Ages

Some information about the compilation from Facebook:

“The new CD contains 13 tracks, including 3 exclusive recordings from Child Bite (detroit), Valina (austria) and The Cover Band (members of wesh, the coke dares, push-pull and magnolia electric company). Other bands appearing on the compilation:

Medusa
Beyond Things
Defiance, OH
Prizzy Prizzy Please
Kentucky Nightmare
Sump Pumps
Trio In Stereo
Everthus The Deadbeats
Lafcadio
Sheasby Matiure and the Mbira Queens

Altough there is entirely new artwork (by Shawn Knight of Child Bite), the packaging is still the same… letter pressed, die cut, silk screened and hand numbered in a match book box with magnetic snaps.

The cost of $6 gets you admission and includes a copy of the CD. If you cannot make the show, the compilations will be available at Landlocked and TD’s for $7.”

This should be a great show. Medusa is supposed to be pretty brutal.

There is also a “secret” show on Friday night that is technically a surprise so I might be there snapping some photos but I can’t announce it now…so stay tuned.

Push-Pull
@The Cinemat
Wednesday, March 4, 8pm
$5, All Ages

I will be stuck in the darkroom tomorrow night, but that doesn’t mean that you kids can’t go out and party. I have actually never seen any of these bands although I have to say that Racebannon intrigues me and I like some of their stuff. I’m not sure quite what the vibe of this show will be, considering Push-Pull is playing an acoustic set and I haven’t heard any of the other bands besides Racebannon. I can’t imagine Racebannon playing acoustic anything. But check it out for yourself!

Blk Jks To Play a Free Show at Jake’s!

Blk Jks 21 February 2009  (18 of 38)
Blk Jks

I just got back from the Explorers Club show, and all I have to say is…Johnny B. Goode. A good end to my three day run at The Cinemat.

So many great shows are coming up so I will try to announce them in a timely fashion. This one is going to be great and is happening tomorrow/today/Monday. And…it’s free. That’s right, free.

Blk Jks 21 February 2009  (16 of 38)

Spirit of ’68 Presents…

Blk Jks
w/
Tammar
Push Pull
@Jake’s, 21+
Monday, March 2nd
10pm
FREE!!!

The show was originally at The Cinemat which would have made my Cinemat run an epic four days long, but alas, it was not to be. My guess would be that the show got too big. It’s going to be a good one. Check out the last time I saw Blk Jks at The Statehouse, or when I saw Tammar at NOISE.

The Explorers Club @The Cinemat Tonight!

Explorers Club

Spirit of ’68 Promotions Presents…

The Explorers Club
w/ Busman’s Holiday (orchestrated)
@The Cinemat
Sunday, March 1st
9pm
$8
All ages

Well it looks like I’ll be chilling at The Cinemat for a third straight night. Explorers Club are a team of devilish harmonizers who are signed to Bloomington indie label Dead Oceans. Everybody says they sound like The Beach Boys and I won’t argue. Although, I will say that they sound more like Pet Sounds Beach Boys, rather than Smiley Smile Beach Boys. Either way they sound great and I highly recommend their first (and only) album, Freedom Wind (listen free here). Here’s a video from their MySpace…it’s not serious…nor should it be. I’ll see you at The Cinemat…again.

Vegetables Are Gangsta – dead prez on Wednesday

dead prez

Cool. I got into dead prez a little while after RBG came out. I was really into Rage Against the Machine and Public Enemy for a while, so these guys were right up my alley. It’s political. It’s philosophical. It’s hip hop. They have two albums out now with another due soon. Their second album, RBG is a little more violent and straightforward than Let’s Get Free. Let’s Get Free is one of the best hip hop albums I’ve ever heard. It’s got hooks, lyrics, and it definitely has a message. It plays like some kind of hip hop/socialist manifesto. It covers everything from the government to psychology to discipline to sociological philosophy. Oh, and Prodigy from Mobb Deep raps about vegetables. If you’ve never heard dead prez before (and I know you have, Dave Chappelle used the Hip-Hop instrumental at the beginning of every show) then I recommend at least listening to Let’s Get Free. If nothing else, check out Hip-Hop and the Animal Farmesque track Animal in Man. Then go to the show because supposedly they sometimes hand out apples to the audience (so they will eat healthy?). So I guess apples are gangsta too.
