InInIn’s South by Southwest Coverage

SXSW 2009 is over. And it was awesome. I got back from Austin around 2 AM Monday morning and then went to class 7 hours later. That was fun. But I have gone through thousands of my pictures just for you! I saw a lot of bands. Some I know the names of and others I don’t know and probably never will.

My favorite shows were Wovenhand and (just as I predicted) Monotonix.

Austin was a blast and I miss all the blipsters, altbros, mexicalts, texalts, and the crazy Japanese metal band wandering around 6th street. All my photos are up on Flickr if you want to check out the big (good) versions:

InInIn’s Picks for SXSW!

overwhelmed

The South By Southwest festival awaits! I will be heading down Tuesday to Austin, Texas for four days of debauchery and great music. You can follow my Twitter to track where I am and what I am doing. It would be impossible for me to see all the bands that I want to see, but I have a few things that I don’t want to miss…so here they are, my personal picks for the festival:

And for a crazy night…

MONOTONIX!!!

monotonix

I don’t think I can stress this enough: GO SEE MONOTONIX. It is an experience that everybody should have at least once. They are 3 sweaty, hairy dudes from Tel Aviv, Israel. I saw them when they played the Blue Bird last year and it was by far the craziest concert I have ever been to. You will leave drenched in beer and sweat but hey, that’s how rock n’ roll should be. This is basically how the experience goes:

Monotonix are playing four times at SXSW:

Wednesday: Red Bull Moon Tower – 3AM
Thursday: KVRX Party @ the Ballet – 2:30AM
Saturday: Mess With Texas @ Waterloo Park – 6:15PM and Panache Showcase @ Mohawk – 1:00AM

Saturday

Hey Marseilles

I’m excited about the Blue Scholars, as they are one of my favorite hip hop groups. I doubt they will be coming toward little ole Indiana soon so I hope to catch them while I can. They are scheduled to play at 5:15pm.

Well that’s all I have for now. Obviously there are about a million bands playing that I want to see, but I won’t list them all. I hope to make it out to see The Handsome Furs, Circle Jerks, Eli Paperboy Reed & The True Loves, Wovenhand, and much much more.

Blk Jks To Play a Free Show at Jake’s!

Blk Jks 21 February 2009 (18 of 38)
Blk Jks

I just got back from the Explorers Club show, and all I have to say is…Johnny B. Goode. A good end to my three day run at The Cinemat.

So many great shows are coming up so I will try to announce them in a timely fashion. This one is going to be great and is happening tomorrow/today/Monday. And…it’s free. That’s right, free.

The show was originally at The Cinemat which would have made my Cinemat run an epic four days long, but alas, it was not to be. My guess would be that the show got too big. It’s going to be a good one. Check out the last time I saw Blk Jks at The Statehouse, or when I saw Tammar at NOISE.

The Weekend in Review – 22 February 2009

And what a week/weekend it was…The Cinemat closes down, Dinosaur Jr. signs to JagJaguwar, I got my EEE PC working (ok so maybe that is only exciting to me). Anyway, there was lots of stuff going down in Bloomington so this is only a slice…

Prayer Breakfast

NOISE went well on Thursday. I only got pictures of The Broderick and Prayer Breakfast (on Nyquil!), but they both put on a good show. Check my Flickr for the rest of the pictures.

Friday I went to the Mahjongg show but did not end up seeing Mahjongg. I saw Golden Birthday before everything was shut down for about a half hour (or so I hear). When An Albatross played The Cinemat the same thing happened. Shut down for some comedian (I heard it was a meeting this time) lots of people left and missed a great show. The Funny Bone is right upstairs and heaven forbid the kids’ loud rock and roll interfere with people telling jokes. I ended up leaving and having a minor run-in with Johnny Law before calling it a night.

Blk Jks 21 February 2009 (6 of 38)
Blk Jks

Saturday night the Blk Jks TORE UP The Statehouse. I caught some of The French & Indian War before Blk Jks and they sounded good. The Blk Jks took about an hour to set up but oh well, they kicked some ass. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time, and man am I glad they signed with SC. There’s more pictures of them up on my Flickr. Oh, and Deer Tick played as well…but following the Blk Jks was unfortunate for them.

It was a pretty bad week for music considering the closing of The Cinemat and the fall of Touch and Go Records.

But there were some good shows and good times so what more can you ask for?

PS: Dead Prez at the Buskirk and Zero Boys in Indy next week!

Deer Tick moved to The Statehouse + Blk Jks

Well it sucks that The Cinemat is out of commission but it is good that the Deer Tick show on Saturday will be going on…and now it has a more beefy lineup. Now the show is:

Deer Tick

BUT NOW ADD…

The Blk Jks are a band from South Africa that just signed with Secretly Canadian. I actually haven’t heard them yet but I have heard from a trusted source that they are excellent. RIP Cinemat, but hellooooooooo Statehouse!
PS: Please don’t be afraid to attend because this is now a house show. It will be awesome and the house is NOT hard to find at all.

Edit: Got the Blk Jks EP from SCD (lots of abbreviations ftw!) and it is excellent. Pick it up/go to the show.
