dead prez: A Photographic Review

dead prez backstage

dead prez came to town last Wednesday and played a show at the Buskirk Chumley with Indianapolis hip hop group Mudkids. I went backstage with IUSTV to snap some photos and then stuck around for a great show. These are some of the pictures I took. The rest are up on my Flickr. Expect the dead prez interview to appear soon on this man’s great blog.

The concert was high energy socialist vegan fun. Kelsey McArdle of the IDS Live Buzz Blog wrote a great article about the concert (and featured some of my pictures). So check it out.

husband&wife Dark Dark Woods Release Show at The Cinemat Tomorrow!

husband&wife @The Cinemat

Well, it finally happened! husband&wife released their album Dark Dark Woods on Crossroads of America Records this week and the tracks I have heard sound great.

husband&wife at WIUX (6 of 10)

I love husband&wife and on Monday I spent some time in the WIUX studio with Tim and Will on Nicole O’Neal’s Indieana Unsigned show. They kicked back in the studio to listen and talk about their old records and the upcoming (now released) album. It was a fun time watching them cringe at their old recordings, which sounded mighty good to me. The rest of the pictures from the studio are up on Flickr

husband&wife at WIUX (5 of 10)

The show is at The Cinemat with Morrow and The Delicious. The rest of the information is on the show poster (well designed I must add!). I’m excited to hear the new album, which will be given out with the purchase of a ticket.

If you can’t wait until tomorrow they have a few videos posted on their site. But this one is so good I will post it here:

I’ll see you tomorrow!

Edit: husband&wife will be at WIUX again today (Friday) from 4-6pm – listen at WIUX.org

Four Tet to Headline Culture Shock 2009

Culture Shock 2009

Hooooooray!

Finally the WIUX Culture Shock 2009 lineup has been officially announced. Personally I’m most excited by Four Tet and local band Found Objects. It’s too bad the other big name had to drop out, but you can’t win ‘em all. I’d say this is still a mighty big win. Way to go WIUX!

The lineup:
Four Tet
Destroyer
Extra Golden
Death Vessel
Dan Friel
Tremendous Fucking (TremFu)
Found Objects

Keep in mind this is totally free. WIN

Cool. I got into dead prez a little while after RBG came out. I was really into Rage Against the Machine and Public Enemy for a while, so these guys were right up my alley. It’s political. It’s philosophical. It’s hip hop. They have two albums out now with another due soon. Their second album, RBG is a little more violent and straightforward than Let’s Get Free. Let’s Get Free is one of the best hip hop albums I’ve ever heard. It’s got hooks, lyrics, and it definitely has a message. It plays like some kind of hip hop/socialist manifesto. It covers everything from the government to psychology to discipline to sociological philosophy. Oh, and Prodigy from Mobb Deep raps about vegetables. If you’ve never heard dead prez before (and I know you have, Dave Chappelle used the Hip-Hop instrumental at the beginning of every show) then I recommend at least listening to Let’s Get Free. If nothing else, check out Hip-Hop and the Animal Farmesque track Animal in Man. Then go to the show because supposedly they sometimes hand out apples to the audience (so they will eat healthy?). So I guess apples are gangsta too.

The Weekend in Review – 22 February 2009

And what a week/weekend it was…The Cinemat closes down, Dinosaur Jr. signs to JagJaguwar, I got my EEE PC working (ok so maybe that is only exciting to me). Anyway, there was lots of stuff going down in Bloomington so this is only a slice…

Prayer Breakfast

NOISE went well on Thursday. I only got pictures of The Broderick and Prayer Breakfast (on Nyquil!), but they both put on a good show. Check my Flickr for the rest of the pictures.

Friday I went to the Mahjongg show but did not end up seeing Mahjongg. I saw Golden Birthday before everything was shut down for about a half hour (or so I hear). When An Albatross played The Cinemat the same thing happened. Shut down for some comedian (I heard it was a meeting this time) lots of people left and missed a great show. The Funny Bone is right upstairs and heaven forbid the kids’ loud rock and roll interfere with people telling jokes. I ended up leaving and having a minor run-in with Johnny Law before calling it a night.

Blk Jks 21 February 2009 (6 of 38)
Blk Jks

Saturday night the Blk Jks TORE UP The Statehouse. I caught some of The French & Indian War before Blk Jks and they sounded good. The Blk Jks took about an hour to set up but oh well, they kicked some ass. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time, and man am I glad they signed with SC. There’s more pictures of them up on my Flickr. Oh, and Deer Tick played as well…but following the Blk Jks was unfortunate for them.

It was a pretty bad week for music considering the closing of The Cinemat and the fall of Touch and Go Records.

But there were some good shows and good times so what more can you ask for?

PS: Dead Prez at the Buskirk and Zero Boys in Indy next week!

Dinosaur Jr. Signs with Jagjaguwar

Dinosaur Jr.

Sweet. +1 for Bloomington!

These guys have been around a while but they can still rock. Got the news at work and I come home and behold! The almighty Pitchfork (sarcasm is hard to detect on the internets) has the story covered

Deer Tick moved to The Statehouse + Blk Jks

Well it sucks that The Cinemat is out of commission but it is good that the Deer Tick show on Saturday will be going on…and now it has a more beefy lineup. Now the show is:

The Blk Jks are a band from South Africa that just signed with Secretly Canadian. I actually haven’t heard them yet but I have heard from a trusted source that they are excellent. RIP Cinemat, but hellooooooooo Statehouse!
PS: Please don’t be afraid to attend because this is now a house show. It will be awesome and the house is NOT hard to find at all.

Edit: Got the Blk Jks EP from SCD (lots of abbreviations ftw!) and it is excellent. Pick it up/go to the show.

The Cinemat to Close Its Doors

The Cinemat Closing

This sucks. This was announced today via The Cinemat’s web page. It is too early to tell exactly what will happen but I would expect that upcoming shows will be moved to alternative venues. This hits particularly hard for those kids out there who aren’t 21. You guys just lost one of the best places to catch an all ages show. I’ll keep you updated, but so far only bad news. The Funny Bone will still be open…hooray.
From The Cinemat:
“FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE • February 17, 2009

THE CINEMAT CEASES VIDEO RENTAL OPERATIONS

Bloomington, Indiana — The Cinemat has ceased video rental operations effective Monday, February 16, 2009.

The Cinemat Screening Room will continue to be open for events and performances through at least Tuesday, March 31, including this weekend’s Oscar telecast. The store hopes to be able to confirm by next week that it will take bookings, and remain open for all shows booked, through Saturday, May 16.

The Cinemat’s rental collection of more than 4500 DVDs and 1000 VHS tapes will be made available for sale to the public beginning Friday, Feb. 20. Sale hours will be 5 to 9 pm daily until the collection is sold or until March 31, whichever comes first. The Cinemat’s holdings will be searchable at thecinemat.com at that time, and titles which have been sold already will be noted there.

Cinemat members with unused rental credits will be able to put those credits toward the purchase of movies at the credits’ full value of $3.60 each.

The Cinemat recommends that its customers continue renting at Plan 9 Video, another independent video rental store two blocks north at 213 N. Walnut St. Their collections have much in common, and Plan 9 will acquire a portion of the Cinemat’s collection this week. Plan 9 will also honor Cinemat memberships and rental credits.

The Cinemat opened in August 2002 in the Knights of Columbus Building at the northeast corner of Fourth and Walnut Streets, and ends its rental service after more than six and a half years in business. A variety of factors led to owner Steve Volan’s decision to close, including the general downturn in the economy, the advent of Websites like YouTube and Hulu and new technologies like the Netflix Player by Roku.

The Funny Bone, on the second floor of the Knights of Columbus building, unaffected by this change, will continue doing its funny business as usual.”
